Socialist dialectic time! Here is something I have been thinking about for a while; you can have whatever opinion you want about DSA, I have opinions of several groups, most of which I am not a member. It’s normal to have opinions like that as activists and as organizers and often the opinions will be differing ones, which is good because that fosters dialectic. 👍🏼 Something I am really sick of though is seeing people in DSA letting the opinions of non members, people who have no interest in being members I might add, guide their decision making or perception of DSA. Btw this is not about any single comrade or caucus or tendency or w/e, this is not meant to be a call out, this is just something I have noticed both locally and nationally within my org. All I am trying to say is that our obligation as an organization is to our membership. We do not need to bend to the whims of people or groups who do not work with us or have no interest in working with us. I agree that DSA needs to adapt its messaging and platform to be a safer organization, especially for POC, non binary people, and sexworkers. That said, always remember that DSA is the largest socialist org in the country for a reason. The appeal that other groups might have is inconsequential to the appeal that DSA is developing. I think we should be less concerned with optics and more concerned with refining our platform. I’m not saying don’t worry about optics at all, I’m saying platform comes first, optics is what you then develop afterwards to elevate your platform. Both are important, and you will never recruit people if all you focus on is optics and not platform. The reverse is also true, don’t get me wrong, if you don’t listen to criticisms you will never grow. But listening to constructive criticism and letting nonmembers guide your decision making within a member driven org are totally different things imo.
